Hey Carolina Guys !

The secession of the state of North Carolina from the American Union occurred on May 20, 1861; this date was chosen to celebrate the anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence of 1775. The right of a state to separate from the Federal Union was not seriously questioned during the formation of the American Republic and had even been contemplated by some New England states during the War of 1812. North Carolina’s secession, however, was more in accord with the doctrines of John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) of South Carolina.

In 1860, during the presidential election, discord between the pro-Union and pro-secession Democrats and successful Whig appeals to North Carolinians' patriotism deepened divisions in the state, thereby preventing any group from gaining enough power to enact their proposed platforms. The state thus did not act on the secession question until after the battle at Fort Sumter. Even then, William Boyd's ';North Carolina on the Eve of Secession (1912 ) 'asserts, North Carolina only grudgingly left the Union to avoid "fighting against the South"

The Tar Heel State, which only acted after Lincoln called for troops, became a bulwark of the Confederate defense, providing more men and supplies to the CSA and suffering more casualties than any other Southern state. In the end, most Tar Heels seceded in the name of self-defense.

The Confederate State of North Carolina issued currency during the years 1861, 1862, 1863 and 1864 by an Act of the legislature on Oct. 1st, 1861. The '5 cent bill from 1861 was among the smallest denomination bills printed during the Confederate period of North Carolina. It was also one of the smallest physical bills, measuring approximately 3" by 1 5/8" ( I was out bid on getting the five cent note.)

Many of the North Carolina banknotes are similar to period issues from other Confederate States; this is not surprising, as the North Carolina banknotes were printed by many of the same printers that were used by other states. It is estimated that the printing of approximately $11,350,000 in banknotes was authorized over the four-year period, but it is unknown how much was actually printed and put into circulation. I WON this Oct. 15,1861 $1 note featuring the goddess Minerva to the left.

The reverse is a monochrome orangy/yellow with tiny printers "extras" to fill in around the Denomination.

. The strains of war made it impossible for the state's currency to hold its value. In the closing months of the Civil War, runaway inflation and the advancing Union armies led to the frantic production and distribution of southern currency. Clothing and basic foodstuffs by then were commanding huge prices, and gold or other personal valuables, not paper money, were required to buy them. By early 1865, a North Carolinian needed as much as $600 to buy a pair of shoes and $1,500 to purchase an overcoat.

Even with the state and authorized State Banks having issued and printed about $16 million dollars in banknotes ; many of this era command a good price in reasonably decent condition.

Glad you had a nice day for pouring concrete. It was warm here too at 64F, but extremely windy, which made it uncomfortable. There is a cold front moving in at 2:30 am with snow and blowing snow attached to it. I got the leaves out of my rain gutters, so am ready for it.

My corner of Texas finally got some cooler and drier air Monday late evening. But by the weekend, 50s predicted. Now that is cooling off!

We could get snow on Friday so we're getting battened down on many fronts.

Cooler weather in early fall seems to be a given with this thing called "globular warming". Bret, I guess this same storm that is gave us short-lived blizzard conditions here, is headed your way. I just came in from shovelling snow off the deck, but the wind keeps blowing more off the roof. The borrowed 4x4 has 2 flat tires on it, so that is of no help to get around.

All in all, this Testicle Tuesday is a good day to stay indoors and keep warm with a sexy young man, who is yet to materialize in my life.

I think Brooke might be referring to being the "hot young man" I was hoping to cuddle with this wintery night. I could certainly go with that scenario.
